There are several avoidable mistakes happening in the Reiki and Holistic Health field that need to be urgently addressed.

Similarly to allopathic medicine, poor foundational training, cutting corners when it comes to practitioner self-care, and the pressures of having a substantive client base are all compromising the integrity of something that has the potential to heal.

Hand healing is a practice with both historical and biblical precedence. Healing people with your hands is something that Jesus, arguably the greatest healer of all time, did and passed on to his disciples.

However, the undertaking is no small feat.  This along with using spiritual inclinations to heal requires more precise, more thorough, and more comprehensive training than is initially presented.

In an attempt to make holistic health more attractive than allopathic medicine, negative side effects, roadblocks, and risks have been omitted or suppressed.

With the surge of new people interested in ancient healing, it is important to have an honest conversation about what the practice entails. Playing With Portals includes an extensive analysis and discussion on the following:

  • A discussion on the duality of energy healing
  • Ways in which practitioners can improve their practice
  • Ways that patients can be better prepared for their Reiki sessions
  • The dangers of solely or primarily "relying on your intuition" for these types of practices
  • Examples of ways Reiki can both positively and negatively affect you, potential side effects to look out for
  • Medical malpractice in the Holistic Health field
  • A call to make the practice more thorough/standardize Reiki curriculums for newer healers

In order for the field to reach its potential, there needs to be significant systemic changes in the aforementioned areas.

As a writer, I wrote Playing With Portals: Notes from an Ex-Reiki Practitioner to share the trauma both I and those close to me endured regarding practitioners inadvertently sending negative energy, dismiss the idea that Reiki is for everybody, strategies to create better Practitioners, and to begin a serious discussion on standardizing Reiki curriculums.

I challenge practitioners of all skill levels and backgrounds to revisit and review their protocols for doing this work and teaching to ensure that what happened to me and those closest to me never happens to anyone else.

I believe the standards I propose can benefit any practitioner. And for those who already incorporate those strategies, it may be worth stressing their importance to newer healers and discussing them with other colleagues. As I believe that some core trainings amongst more experienced practitioners have been lost amongst newer ones.

The last thing anyone wants is to hurt someone they intended to heal.

I pray my words are received well and that readers are inspired by my words.  I was not the perfect healer, nor do I claim to be. The goal is to prevent practitioners from inadvertently hurting clients, prepare people for what it means to engage in spiritual healing practices, and give newcomers a more solid understanding of the spiritual world and its many entities.

I also hope my words serve as a guide for newer Reiki therapists, as a reminder to more advanced ones, and as a voice to victims of medical malpractice in holistic health settings.

Thank you and happy reading!
